Platycerium Rydeen - "Lightning" Staghorn

Known as "雷電" (Lightning) in Chinese, this striking hybrid showcases the best of both parent species. Features an explosive "wild crown" characteristic inherited from P. veitchii, creating a dramatic upright shield frond formation that resembles freshly permed hair or an explosion. The fertile fronds display the blue-green coloration of Mt. Lewis with extremely fine, multiple divisions and delicate curling tips. Mature plants develop specialized small secondary fronds that add to the overall dramatic appearance. The combination creates a plant with both wild, aggressive crown structure and elegant, finely divided fertile fronds.
Care Requirements:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light; can tolerate some direct morning sun when acclimated
  • Water: Allow to dry between waterings; prefers consistent moisture but not waterlogged
  • Temperature: 65-85°F (18-29°C) - heat tolerant and adaptable
  • Mounting: Well-draining sphagnum moss on sturdy boards; excellent air circulation essential
Special Notes: Rydeen is a prestigious hybrid created by renowned Thai grower Wanna Pinjipaitoon (CNX), crossing P. veitchii wild (Australian Silver) × P. Mt. Lewis. Wanna's original Rydeen mother plant won high-level awards at the 2019 Thailand Fern Competition. This hybrid is considered one of the classic collector-grade crosses, comparable to famous cultivars like 'Celso' and 'Pedro.' Despite its dramatic appearance, Rydeen is relatively heat-tolerant and easier to grow than many rare platyceriums, though growth rate is slower than common species. The name "Rydeen" (雷電) perfectly captures its explosive, lightning-like crown formation. Highly sought after by collectors for its combination of wild aesthetics and manageable care requirements. Plants have lived in greenhouse conditions from small to mature size, demonstrating good adaptability to controlled environments.
