Playcerium Willinkii “Bacteria”
One of the world's smallest staghorn ferns, this ultra-compact dwarf cultivar features short, broad fertile fronds with multiple short divisions creating a dense, textured appearance. The fronds display a distinctive dark green coloration with dense white pubescence (fine hairs) that gives it a unique "bacteria-like" surface texture - hence the name. The overall form is extremely compact and delicate, making it perfect for small spaces.
Care Requirements:
- Light: Bright, indirect light (avoid direct sunlight)
- Water: Allow to dry between waterings; careful not to overwater due to small size
- Temperature: 70-80°F (21-27°C) - prefers stable temperatures
- Mounting: Fine sphagnum moss on small boards; requires excellent drainage
Special Notes: Native to Java, this dwarf mutation of P. willinkii is prized as one of the smallest staghorn varieties available. Mature plants typically reach only 6-12cm (2.5-5 inches), making them ideal for collectors with limited space. Due to their extremely small size, they can be challenging for beginners as they're sensitive to overwatering and environmental stress. Once established, they're relatively hardy but grow very slowly, taking 3+ years to reach mature form.
