Platycerium Monkey North - "Monkey North" Staghorn Known as "北猴" (Monkey North) in Chinese, this striking hybrid showcases the best characteristics from both parent species. Features the distinctive white, fuzzy texture and silvery veining inherited from P. veitchii wild, combined with the multiple divisions and growth pattern of P. willinckii. The shield fronds develop into tall, upright crowns with multiple lobes and fine divisions, creating an impressive "high crown" formation. Fertile fronds display beautiful white pubescence (fine white hairs) and prominent silver veining, with the characteristic willinckii growth pattern where new fronds emerge edgewise then rotate horizontal. The overall appearance is both majestic and elegant, with cascading antler-like fronds. Care Requirements: Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid direct sunlight which can scorch the delicate white hairs Water: Dry-wet cycle watering - summer every 2-3 days, winter every 3-4 days; avoid overwatering Temperature: 65-80°F (18-27°C) with good ventilation Mounting: Well-draining sphagnum moss; prefers slightly moist conditions, never waterlogged Special Notes: Monkey North is a highly sought-after hybrid created by crossing P. willinckii × P. veitchii wild (Australian Silver). Originally developed by renowned breeder Banna, this cultivar has become one of the most popular staghorn hybrids due to its combination of dramatic crown structure and beautiful white, fuzzy fronds. The "North Monkey" name reflects its distinctive upright, tall crown formation. Individual plants can show variation in expression, with some leaning more toward the veitchii parent (more silver and fuzzy) or the willinckii parent (more divisions and growth pattern). Mature plants can reach 2-3 feet wide and 1.5-2 feet tall, making them impressive specimen plants. Known for being relatively easy to care for compared to pure species, making it accessible to intermediate growers. The combination of air-purifying qualities and striking appearance makes it a favorite among collectors and interior designers alike. Shipping from Canada!
