Platycerium Kitkashkood “Thin” - Narrow Leaf Hybrid Staghorn
Aesthetic Appeal:
This exceptional narrow leaf form of the Mt. Kitshakood hybrid showcases dramatically elongated, slender fertile fronds that cascade gracefully like delicate antlers. The distinctive fronds are notably long and narrow compared to the standard Kitshakood, creating an elegant, refined appearance that resembles spidery fingers reaching downward. Features the characteristic ridleyi-style shield fronds that form a protective crown base, combined with the coronarium influence in the fertile frond structure. The thin form creates a more delicate, architectural silhouette while maintaining the hybrid vigor of both parent species.
Care Requirements:
• Light: Bright, indirect light; can tolerate some direct morning sun when acclimated
• Water: Allow potting medium to dry slightly between waterings; prefers consistent moisture without waterlogging
• Temperature: 65-80°F (18-27°C) - adaptable to various temperature ranges
• Mounting: Well-draining sphagnum moss on wood boards; excellent drainage essential for healthy growth
Special Notes:
This cultivar represents a specially selected narrow leaf form of the popular Mt. Kitshakood hybrid (P. ridleyi × P. coronarium), discovered in the Kitshakood region of Chanthaburi Province, Thailand. The “thin” designation refers to the notably slender, elongated fertile fronds that distinguish it from the broader standard Kitshakood form. This hybrid is extremely variable depending on the influence of parent species, with the thin form showing more pronounced ridleyi characteristics in frond structure. Thai sources now offer various Kitshakood leaf forms, with the narrow form being one of the most attractive and unusual-looking variants. Mature fronds can reach up to 1 meter (3 feet) in length, creating a spectacular cascading display. Relatively easy to care for compared to pure species, making it accessible to intermediate growers seeking a distinctive hybrid with elegant proportions. The combination of hybrid vigor and refined aesthetics makes this an excellent choice for collectors wanting something unique yet manageable.
