Platycerium grande - Giant Philippine Staghorn
Aesthetic Appeal:
This magnificent species lives up to its name as the true giant of the staghorn world, producing some of the most impressive fronds in the entire Platycerium genus. The sterile shield fronds can reach up to two meters (6.5 feet) in length and develop into massive, two-lobed structures with distinctive long hanging "fingers" that create a dramatic cascading effect. The fertile fronds emerge from the center and can grow up to four feet in length, covered in dense, fuzzy gray-green hairs that give them a distinctive antler-like appearance. The overall plant creates a spectacular architectural statement with its enormous size and bold, sculptural form that commands attention in any space.
Care Requirements:
•Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid direct sunlight which can scorch the massive fronds
•Water: Regular watering when top layer feels dry; water entire plant including basal rosette and fertile fronds
•Temperature: 60-80°F (15-27°C) during growing season, can tolerate cooler temperatures but not below 50°F (10°C)
•Mounting: Requires large, sturdy mounting surface due to massive size; excellent drainage essential with well-draining potting mix high in organic matter
Special Notes:
Native exclusively to the island of Mindanao in the Philippines, P. grande is one of only two staghorn species endemic to the Philippines, alongside P. coronarium. Known locally as "dapong repolyo" meaning "tree cabbage," this critically endangered species has become highly prized in cultivation due to overcollection and habitat loss in its native range. As a true epiphyte, it grows naturally on tree branches, fallen logs, and rocks in tropical rainforests, using specialized basal fronds to trap falling debris for nutrients. The species requires in vitro propagation techniques for mass production due to the difficulty of spore germination under natural conditions. Despite its massive size potential, P. grande can be successfully grown in containers when young, though mature specimens require substantial space and strong mounting systems. The thick, fleshy rhizomatous root system helps the plant absorb water and nutrients efficiently. This species represents the pinnacle of staghorn collecting, offering unmatched dramatic impact for those with adequate space and experience. Fertilize monthly during growing season with balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half-strength. High humidity levels (70-80%) are preferred but the species is surprisingly adaptable to various conditions once established.
