Platycerium Alcicorne "Madagascar"

Distinguished by its dark green fertile fronds with dense white pubescence (fine hairs), creating a striking contrast against the grey-green shield fronds. The Madagascar variety features deeply ridged, rounded shield fronds that develop pronounced folds in the upper half when given adequate light. Dead shield fronds turn nearly black (versus brown in African varieties). Fertile fronds are upright and deeply divided, resembling true elk antlers more than other staghorn varieties.
Care Requirements:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light to half-shade; can tolerate full sun when well-acclimated
  • Water: Prefers acidic water (rainwater or distilled water ideal); drought tolerant but needs regular water during growing season
  • Temperature: Tropical - minimum 59°F (15°C), prefers 70-85°F (21-29°C)
  • Mounting: Well-draining sphagnum moss; more tolerant of moisture than African varieties
Special Notes: Native to Madagascar, this variety is one of the original 18 staghorn species and considered easier to grow than many rare varieties. More tolerant of excess water compared to the African form of P. alcicorne. Goes dormant in winter when shield fronds naturally die back - reduce watering during this period. Known for its robust growth and distinctive upright fertile fronds that truly resemble deer antlers. Excellent choice for beginners seeking an authentic elkhorn appearance.
