Platycerium Ginka - "Silver Flower" Staghorn
Known as "銀華" (Silver Flower) in Chinese, this cultivar is distinguished by its spectacular thick white fur covering the fronds and prominent white/silver veining that creates a striking contrast against the green base color. The fertile fronds are wide with distinctive white veins and fine, short divisions that create an elegant, compact appearance. Features unique spore patches with characteristic curling and multiple branching. The overall plant maintains a relatively compact size compared to other staghorns while displaying exceptional silver-white coloration.
Care Requirements:
- Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid direct sunlight which can damage the delicate white fur
- Water: Allow to dry between waterings; approximately every 3 days in growing season, weekly in winter
- Temperature: 65-80°F (18-27°C) with good air circulation
- Mounting: Well-draining sphagnum moss with excellent drainage; sensitive to overwatering
Special Notes: Ginka is a carefully selected mutation from FSQ (Foong Si Qi) spore-grown plants, developed by renowned Thai grower Wanna Pinjipaitoon. The tissue-cultured versions are also known as "Geisha." This cultivar represents one of the most distinctive selections from FSQ sporelings, prized for its deep, intricate silver veining and fine short divisions. Maximum leaf length reaches around 50cm (20 inches), making it more compact than the parent FSQ. Highly sought after by collectors for its unique combination of white fur, silver veins, and distinctive spore curl patterns. The name "Ginka" (銀華) literally means "Silver Flower," perfectly describing its metallic appearance. Considered a collector-grade plant that combines both ornamental and collection value, easily recognizable at first glance due to its distinctive characteristics.
